Evaluation Question 2

Question 2
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I believe that I have incorporated a lot of synergy between all three of my tasks, the trailer, the magazine cover and the movie poster. I did this in many different ways when making each individually.

The first task I developed was my Film trailer, in which I used many stylistic elements that would carry over into the other tasks. The biggest example of this is the movie's slasher villain. I decided to make the villain the centre of the marketing for the movie as previous slasher franchises have used their own villains, such as Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, as the single embodiment of the movies, something which I am replicating here.  This can be seen in how i am using my movie's villain on all three tasks, with the closing images in the trailer being of the villain, and the character

Then I moved onto my movie magazine, wherein which I needed to decide what my overall house style throughout all three tasks would be. I decided that the best option for my house style would be a combination of red, black and white. The colour of red is a symbolic code for blood, danger and violence, and therefore it represents what a horror movie will often feature. The black and white contrast well with the red, making the text in red stand out more in bold, as well as black being symbolically representative of darkness, death and night, all of which factor into my horror movie.

The magazine features the same font for the movie's title, which further continues the synergy and helps the text become distinct and more recognisable, as a viewer would have seen it multiple times in the movie's marketing campaign. The same font for the movie's title was also used on my poster for the aforementioned reasons

To conclude, the combination of my main task and my ancillaries has helped create a level of synergy through all three, with changes being made to each task to help improve each piece and the consistent features and conventions of each.

Editing my main image for my poster

For my main image on my poster i have used the filters on Photoshop in order to make the picture way more effective for the horror genre. I have added a black an white filter to the image which makes the shot look darker and less bright. The filter also works because it blacks out the villains eyes, which works well to dehumanise the character, like my horror villain style models try and do.

Podcast Script Question 4

Research Stage
While researching, I used Apple Macs and YouTube to improve my knowledge of conventions within horror trailers. I watched the trailers and studied the way that they used conventions, such as low angle shots to establish power, which I eventually used in my trailer. Before creating my trailer, I created a music video to familiarise myself with the Canon camera and the iMovie app, both of which would be used in the filming and eventual editing of my trailer. I used the website Blogger as a resource to record all of this research as this would ensure all my information would be in one place. I used Google Chrome to access any necessary online research, as Google is the search engine that I am most familiar with.

Planning Stage
For my planning I started with creating two different versions of a storyboard and began by forming a draft storyboard on paper, drawing my own individual frames and shots, before creating a more technically accurate version on I-movie. The I-movie storyboard allows me to plan specific timings for each of my shots, so this is very useful for giving me a sense of whether a shot is too long or too short, and overall speeds up the development of the complete trailer. I then began to plan where I was going to be filming my trailer, and finding a location that was appropriate for the trailer I was making. I decided to go to a area called Tower Grounds, and I did this

Construction Stage
The Camera that was used when shooting the film was a Canon camera. This was an expensive camera, and therefore this led to a decent quality of image, which helps when trying to make a decent horror trailer, or any trailer for that matter. When it came to the editing of the film, I used     I-movie for Mac OS, which gave me several tools in which to enhance my film. Firstly, I incorporated different filters in order to improve the look of certain shots. For example, there is a brief action shot that when editing, looked too bright for the type of trailer I am creating, which is horror. So I decided to use the filters in order to make the shot more appropriate, eventually choosing the sci-fi filter, which worked in my trailer. Another tool I used was the text tool, which was really useful in creating elements of the trailer that are considered conventions, such as the title of the movie at the end and the cast list. This tool proved to really useful as I could change the font from a comic style to one that more appropriately suits my genre of film.

Overall the progress I made in construction was made possible by my research on trailer conventions and their features, as well as my planning by learning how to effectively use I-movie.

Developing my poster part 5

The final main element of my poster has been added in the form of my main image. This image has been filtered to make it look more menacing, and it also works to naturally link the image to the rest of the poster. The brick wall also works as a background due to it also being a part of a alleyway location in the trailer, and it makes the skull mask stand out more boldly.

Developing my Poster part 4

I have added more of the typical features onto my base poster, such as the studio logos, which are the ones featured in my trailer in order to continue synergy between the tasks. I have also added the age rating for this film, which i have set as "R", which is the standard rating for gory horror films.

Developing my Poster part 3

I have decided to make some changes to the layout of my page, the title of the movie has been moved down as the main image will encompass the majority of the upper half of the page, and the poster has been given its tagline, which mentions famous horror movies made by Warner Bros in order to make a potential audience see my movie as having a pedigree.

Developing my poster part 2

The next stage of my poster development, i have added more features that make the poster more similar in structure to my style models. These include the studio's prior horror movies they have created, and in this instance i chose The Exorcist and The Shining, which are two of the most recognisable horror classics, so any potential viewer would know of the studio's pedigree with the horror genre. I also included the credits for the movie at the bottom of the poster, which is a common feature of posters and allows a viewer to look at who is acting in the movie, as well as showing who made the movie.

Developing my poster part 1

I have begun my movie poster by adding the title of the film first, and i have done this first as it is probably the most eye catching part of the poster other than the main image, and as my main image does not need to be added until the end.

Movie Magazine inspirations

Movie Poster Inspirations

Adding the studio logos to my trailer

i have included studio logos into my trailer in order to make the trailer feel authentic as many trailers will either open or have near the start with the logos of the companies that made the film. For my movie, i decided Warner Bros is a good choice to be my studio as they have made some iconic horror movies over the years such as The Exorcist and The Shining. I then added a logo animation for Warner Bros before incorporating my own production logo and its animated intro into the trailer.

My own production company

Developing my magazine part 7

In the next part of my development process, i have added some of the smaller details that are often seen on magazine covers, especially Empire magazine. The tagline i have included under the masthead is the one that is a common feature of Empire magazine, and the line itself,"The World's Biggest Movie Magazine" calls out the pedigree and popularity of the magazine. I have also added the conventions of the date and price onto the magazine, and i did this in order to fit more with the standard layout of a magazine cover, and the price i chose was representative of the style model, Empire, and its pricing.

Developing my magazine part 6

I have added more to the bottom of the cover, because it previously looked very open and with very little in there. This is why i decided to add another cover line, this time i decided to show another interview, in order to make the magazine look like it has plenty within. This time, i decided to make the interview about Quentin Tarantino, who is a internationally acclaimed director with his own following and could draw in new readers who are only there for his interview. The pulled quote from the interview is "Why i'm only making 10 movies" and this is a good way to get interest from the reader as it is a answer to a question on Tarantino retiring at 10 movies that as of now has no concrete answer. I have also added a barcode onto the cover in order to further replicate the authenticity of Empire magazine, which has often had the barcode at the bottom right of the screen.

Developing my magazine part 5

I have added more conventions to my magazine that show that there is more in this magazine than just the main headline of my film. I have shown through cover lines that there are more films within the magazine. I decided to pick some of the biggest blockbusters of 2017 in order to make the magazine more appealing to a wider audience. I have also added a skyline with the phrase "world exclusive" as this makes the magazine content appear more unique and exclusive to only this magazine issue.

Developing my magazine part 4

The next crucial element of my magazine i have decided to include is the anchoring text for my headline, which serves to give the reader more information than just the name of the film. The anchoring text here sticks to the same house style i have consistently been using, and i highlighted the word "biggest" in capital letters in order to make it bold and eye catching and the word itself gives the reader a impression of what the scale and production value the movie has. I also decided to include a quote from the production, and i did this because it immediately lets the reader infer that there is a interview inside where the quote is pulled from.

Developing my Magazine part 3

Next on the development of my magazine, i decided to add another key convention, being the headline of the magazine, in this case the movie's title "Tenebris". This is done using the same font that i have used on both my movie trailer and poster, and maintains the consistent house style of both the colours and fonts used.

Developing my magazine part 2

The next thing i have done is add the Empire masthead, which is a key convention of my magazine, and it is placed at the area where my style model, Empire itself, always places its masthead. This is important for the magazine to look like a authentic magazine that Empire would publish. I chose Empire over Total film and other movie magazines due to its size, as in my opinion it is the biggest UK based magazine.

Developing my magazine part 1

The first thing i did was decide on my photo i was going to be using for my magazine. i eventually decided on this one as the photo is medium close up, and this follows my style models of the Empire magazine. The filter i decided to use has enhanced the photo in contrasting the slasher with the brick wall behind him, as the original photo had very little to make the villain stand out. Here, the jacket and features of the mask serve to stand out more, and the brick wall has this effectively grey background, which further acts to make the villain stand out on the cover.

Changing my font style for the title

After a review of my trailer, i decided that i must replace my old font for the movie's title with a new one, something that was not only more stylised, but has a border to stand out on my movie magazine and poster. I decided to use a font generating website rather than the default fonts, as this creates a more stylised and recognisable look. The new font retains the same colour as the previous font, as the red font is a symbolic image of blood, danger and violence, and that is appropriate in a slasher film were it is expected to have all of those symbolic meanings.

Changing my production company logo

When reviewing my trailer, i noticed how the logo i was using was unsuitable for the horror trailer i was looking to create. Firstly, it was too light hearted a name in "turtle shell" and i think that a more serious name was appropriate, therefore i changed the production company to "Olympian Productions", which is a name that i believe sounds more like a real life production company. I also used Keynote in order to create a intro for my production company in my trailer. This is a improvement over the last one as all i used was a simple still image of the company, whereas this time i added effects to both the logo and accompanying text.

Movie Magazine Ideas:

For my magazine i was deciding between two different magazines for a primary style model, being Empire and Total Film respectively. I ended up eventually choosing Empire, due to my familiarity with that magazine brand and the overall layout of the conventions on the front cover. The magazine will have a house style of red and black, as these colours are symbolic codes for danger, darkness and blood. The main image will be of the villain of my film, as it is the most marketable and recognisable part of the movie, and like horror icons like Jason Vorhees and Freddy Kreuger, will come to be symbolic of the film.

Movie Magazine Ideas

I have planned to make my magazine cover for my magazine have considerable influences from the likes of Empire and Total Film. The cover will feature the standard conventions of magazine covers for example it will feature a masthead, headline and tagline and others. I am likely to base the overall issue more on Empire as they are more popular and recognisable, but also due to the way they use their mast head in conjunction with the main image.

Movie Poster Ideas: The Shot

I am planning to have one of two shots for my poster, both of which feature the main villain. The first of which will be a shot of the villains mask in the centre with blood dripping on it. This is symbolic of the type of slasher film that is being made, with a common technique of the masked and silent villain apparent here. The second shot i have planned is one of the villain at a low angle holding his miniature chainsaw with blood on, set in the backdrop of a dark alleyway.

Podcast Practice

Here me, Zhongwei Zhao and Kyle Dos Santos created a model podcast to give an idea for how a podcast can be used to answer a evaluation question. In this podcast script, we answered the question,

"How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? "

Research Stage (Kyle)
While researching, I used Apple Macs and YouTube to improve my knowledge of conventions within horror trailers. I watched the trailers and studied the way that they used conventions, such as low angle shots to establish power, which I eventually used in my trailer. Planning Stage (Zhong): For my planning I started with a storyboard and created a draft story on paper, and then further developed it in I-Movie. In I-Movie it allowed us to model each frame, for example how long the shot was going to be and allowed us to add text to explain what that shot was going to be. I have planned a few different locations to film in at the start I was considering to record at. The first area that I came up with was central park, but I realised that the location was unsuitable as it was not dense enough in trees to accurately represent a forest. Furthermore, the second area I have looked at is the tower grounds, this was suitable for my film because my film is mainly set in a forest. Due to the fact that it takes us time to walk to tower grounds I have mostly planned Saturdays to go filming as we don’t have much time to get there during the school day.

Construction Stage (Jamie)

The Camera that was used when shooting the film was a Canon camera. This was an expensive camera, and therefore this led to a decent quality of image, which helps when trying to make a decent horror trailer, or any trailer for that matter.
